Alabama Power has provided customers with reliable and affordable electricity since 1906. A subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Company, the company serves homes, businesses, and industries in the southern two-thirds of Alabama with over 86,000 miles of power lines.
In addition to delivering electricity to a growing state, Alabama Power remains among America’s leading utility providers in the successful recruitment of new jobs, industries, and investments. Evidence of that comes from Site Selection magazine, which again included the company among its Top Utilities in Economic Development, recognizing the accomplishments of Alabama Power’s Economic and Community Development (ECD) team during 2025.
Last year, the ECD team helped account for nearly 1,100 jobs created by new and expanding facilities. Collectively, those projects represent capital investment of more than $5 billion — a powerful endorsement of Alabama’s continuing attractiveness as a preferred site for companies in growth mode.
“Attracting and retaining businesses looking for a supportive environment where they can grow and thrive has always been a vital part of Alabama Power’s mission,” said Patrick Murphy, vice president of economic development for Alabama Power. “Bringing new jobs and investment to Alabama is a team effort, and we’re pleased to be part of a great team of dedicated professionals at the state and local levels.
“Alabama Power also takes pride in our history as a reliable and trusted partner of businesses and industries throughout the state — and of the communities and customers we serve.”
A key element of Alabama Power’s economic development strategy through recent years has been its role in addressing the need for development-ready sites in communities throughout the company’s service-area, which includes approximately two-thirds of Alabama. Through its engagement, Alabama Power helps ensure the state’s ability to devote optimal resources to site development, improvement, and acquisition.
For the ECD team, the state of Alabama’s Site Evaluation and Economic Development Strategy (SEEDS) is a ready tool. Created by Gov. Kay Ivey and approved by the Alabama Legislature in 2023 — with support from Alabama Power — SEEDS provides grants for site preparation and development, matching allocations by municipal and county governments. It is part of a larger package of economic development bills advanced to enhance Alabama’s competitiveness.
SEEDS awarded its third annual round of grants in 2025. The $15.7 million in grants to 21 industrial sites generated an additional $12.3 million in local matches — underscoring the statewide commitment to enhancing Alabama’s inventory of available sites. Since the inception of SEEDS, 77 industrial sites in locations across the state have received a total of $138 million.
As part of the effort to ensure availability of sites, Alabama Power continues to leverage its outstanding Geographic Information System (GIS) capabilities. The ECD team uses advanced software to analyze a variety of factors — topography, flood plain analysis, availability of
critical infrastructure — in identifying the most market-ready potential locations for a particular project or prospect.
Meanwhile, Alabama Power is helping to shape the state’s broadening emphasis on commercialization of startup companies, including the launch of the PilotAL program late in 2025. Sponsored by Innovate Alabama and operated by the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama (EDPA), the new program seeks to pair entrepreneurs with customers in targeted industries who can benefit from their product or service.
“We expect PilotAL to be a powerful tool for recruiting entrepreneurs to Alabama,” Murphy said. “It provides opportunities to deploy startup innovation to solve existing pain points for industries in our state.”
Alabama Power is also invested in ensuring the readiness and competitiveness of Alabama’s workforce. The company is a partner — along with the Alabama Community College System, the Alabama Legislature, and key industry allies — in the Alabama Energy Infrastructure Training Center and Network (AEITCN), a statewide, public-private workforce initiative.
The mission of AEITCN is to meet the growing demand for skilled energy infrastructure professionals by delivering industry-aligned training for jobs in this rapidly evolving energy sector. In 2025, AEITCN established five core training pathways delivered through a coordinated network of community colleges across Alabama: EV charging infrastructure, solar and microgrid systems, advanced HVAC, and energy-efficiency weatherization.
Last year also saw Alabama Power continue expansion of its renewable portfolio to support customer sustainability goals and reinforce its commitment to delivering reliable, innovative, and customer-focused clean energy solutions. The company earned approval of new solar projects under its Renewable Subscription Program (RSP) program that enables customers to access utility-scale renewable energy. It also enjoyed continued growth in its Renewable Energy Credit (REC) initiative that provides flexible, cost-effective solutions for emissions reduction.
To further bolster Alabama’s innovation ecosystem, Alabama Power continued its support for numerous accelerators and other programs and initiatives to further enhance the state’s innovation ecosystem. That includes working closely with economic development organizations in rural communities to enhance their ability to attract innovation-related growth.
Through new initiatives in energy, mobility, and infrastructure launched in 2025 to support site readiness and competitiveness into the future, Alabama Power enhanced the state’s attractiveness to new and expanding companies and further strengthened Alabama’s economic development efforts.
Alabama Power continued to expand electric transportation infrastructure across its service territory during 2025. The company’s Public Charging initiative delivered more than 7,000 charging sessions last year in rural and underserved communities, while its Make Ready program enabled development of 27 customer-led charging sites by providing rebates to business customers who install EV charging infrastructure at their facilities
“Together,” said Murphy, “Alabama Power’s numerous, coordinated investments in infrastructure, innovation, and customer programs are positioning Alabama as a leader in electrification while enhancing our ability to attract new industry and support emerging sectors.
“We are building for the future.”
