Birmingham is the top destination in America for new college graduates seeking jobs, an “economic southern powerhouse.” That’s according to a new study from payroll processing and human resources solutions provider ADP.
How strong is the job market? Where will my starting salary go the farthest? Where are recent graduates most likely to be hired?
Those are the questions considered by the ADP study, which at looked 53 U.S. metro areas to find the best combination of pay, affordability, and opportunity. Conclusions were based on analysis of anonymized payroll data of more than 400,000 people aged 20 to 29, representing over 20,000 employers with jobs on a college-level career track. Key factors considered were wages, hiring, and cost of living.
Ranked fifth last year, the Birmingham-Hoover metro region’s rise to #1 was driven by strong hiring and rapid wage growth, the study said. Between January 2025 and January 2026, hiring increased by 2.8 percent in Birmingham, while median annual wages for recent graduates grew to $59,004 — an increase of 16 percent during the preceding year. In terms of affordability, the region outperformed all but two of the 53 metros studied.
According to ADP, Birmingham “rose to the top with one of the strongest hiring rates for 20-somethings in college degree-level jobs and an even better affordability score.” The study took note of the region’s “big bioscience sector, anchored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and large employers in the automotive and advanced-materials industries.”
“If you can get that right mix of hiring, pay, and affordability, it’s a really attractive launch point for a young person,” Nela Richardson, ADP’s chief economist said of the study’s findings.
Notably, ADP’s analysis touted the South as the nation’s leading region in opportunity for new graduates. In addition to top-rated Birmingham, the company’s top 10 included Tampa, Raleigh, Tulsa, Nashville, and Charlotte.
