At Mobile, the Alabama State Port Authority operates the state's full-service, deepwater port on the Gulf of Mexico. The Port of Mobile offers terminal services for shipping lines serving global trade lanes, with 41 berths providing complete service for shippers, including intermodal transfer and handling, warehousing and security.
The port's container, general cargo and bulk facilities have immediate access to two interstate systems, five Class 1 railroads, and nearly 15,000 miles of inland and Intracoastal Waterway connections. Brookley Aeroplex, adjacent to the port, offers air cargo freight forwarding services and two runways: 9,600 feet (2,932 meters) and 7,800 feet (2,377 meters).
At 45 feet (13.7 meters), the port's main channel and a new turning basin provide one of the nation's deepest permanently navigable channels serving post-Panamax ships carrying containers, steels and coal. The port's upper harbor channel is 40 feet in draft (12.2 meters) and services Panamax ships carrying bulk, general cargo roll-off/roll-on, heavy lift and oversized cargoes.
In 2009, the Port of Mobile handled more than 54 million tons of cargo.
