Connected in Alabama

Alabama is located in the center of the fastest growing and most populous region in the United States.  Alabama offers a unique set of logistic attributes for companies.  Among these assets are:

Interstates

Five interstate highways converge in Alabama, allowing goods to be shipped to major markets.  The completion of Interstate 22 linking Birmingham to Memphis will make Birmingham the hub of four interstate highways.

Rail

Alabama offers over 2,000 miles of railroad track serviced by five Class I railroads and many short lines.  Excellent main line connections give shippers good access to all major market centers.

Aviation

Alabama is served by seven major commercial airlines and seven commuter airlines operating through six commercial airports. International flights are easily accessible via direct flights from major connecting cities. In addition, Alabama is located between two of the country's largest air freight centers - Memphis and Atlanta.

Ports

Alabama is ranked 25th in the United States for exports.  Companies in Alabama ship products to 180 countries.  The ports and intermodal facilities have been instrumental to increasing Alabama’s trade.

The Port of Mobile has 37 berths, five miles (eight kilometers) of waterfront, a main channel depth of 45 feet (13.7 meters), and a cargo handling area consisting of 4 million square feet (1.2 million mP2P).  A major expansion of the port is under way.  The $300 million expansion will result in it becoming the 6th busiest port in the United States.

Huntsville International Intermodal Facility offers receiving, transferring, storing and distribution for domestic and international air, rail and highway cargo.

It’s no surprise that numerous, nationally known companies have major distribution operations in the state, including:  Home Depot, Wal-Mart, McLane Company, ACE Retail Support Center, Target, C&S Wholesale Grocers and SYSCO.
