Industry

Alabama’s forest industry is growing faster than the forests themselves — literally.

Timber expansion in the state outpaces removals by 34 percent. With 22.9 million acres of forest, the state’s timber industry boasts 47,000 employees and 650 forest-product manufacturing operations. These operations are productive, with Alabama ranking No. 1 in the U.S. in pulp production and No. 3 in paper production. The industry generates $13 billion in annual economic activity.
